about

My early research for this project led me to watching hours of whale videos on Youtube. One video about sperm whales explained their intensely powerful echolocation abilities. They make loud clicks and listen to the reflected sound. When being studied by scientists, the whales are completely silent until divers turn off the boat motor, remove the air tanks and jump in the water. At that point, and only on their terms, the whales will begin speaking. Blind navigation relies on adhering to strict rules set out by path-finding accessibility tools, providing little opportunity for the individual to deviate from the assigned route. Tony uses this exhibition and his experience as a blind person to reaffirm his agency and design pathways for his intended audiences.
